Why MSK Health Matters at Work: CCA Unveils MSK Workplace Toolkit on World Spine Day

Toronto – October 16, 2024 The Canadian Chiropractic Association (CCA) is proud to announce the launch of its new MSK Workplace Toolkit, designed to support employers in promoting musculoskeletal (MSK) health within their organizations. The release of this toolkit aligns with the global celebration of World Spine Day on October 16, a day dedicated to raising awareness about spinal health and well-being.

The theme for this year’s World Spine Day, “Support Your Spine,” underscores the importance of maintaining a healthy spine to prevent common MSK disorders that can affect productivity and quality of life.

QUICK FACTS:

  • 58% of Canadians reported that they missed work or found it harder to do their job because of chronic pain.1
  • 63% of employees say their workplace environment and/or set-up contributes to their aches and pains. 2
  • The current economic burden of musculoskeletal diseases and injuries in Canada is estimated at $41.7 billion, with $34.1 billion in direct costs and $7.6 billion in indirect costs.3
  • Between 2019-2023 WorkSafeBC accepted 83,000 time-loss claims for musculoskeletal injuries, with associated costs exceeding $2 billion. They also account for 30 per cent of all time-loss claims. 4

In response to these staggering numbers, the CCA’s MSK Workplace Toolkit offers a practical approach to developing a workplace strategy that prioritizes spinal health and overall MSK well-being.

“MSK conditions are among the leading causes of disability and lost workdays in Canada,” says Dr. Ayla Azad, CEO of the Canadian Chiropractic Association. “Our toolkit provides employers with the resources they need to create a healthier workplace by addressing these common issues head-on. We are excited to launch this initiative on World Spine Day, reinforcing our commitment to supporting the spine and promoting better health outcomes for all Canadians.”

The toolkit includes:

  • Actionable Steps: Guidance on how to implement an MSK strategy in the workplace, how to garner leadership engagement
  • Educational Resources: Downloadable posters and materials to educate employees on the importance of spinal health.
  • Customizable Presentations: The option to book a free Lunch and Learn session tailored to the specific needs of your workplace.

With the CCA’s MSK Workplace Toolkit, organizations can play a crucial role in preventing MSK conditions, reducing absenteeism, and fostering a culture of wellness.
