From Start to Silver: Dr. Kaity Szabo’s Olympic Rowing Triumph
Dr. Szabo started working with various sport teams as an Emergency First Responder while completing her degree at CMCC. Upon graduation, she transitioned into primary therapist roles within sport teams and organizations, deepening her expertise in managing athletic injuries and optimizing performance. She honed her skills through roles including Co-Lead Performance Therapist with the Niagara River Lions (CEBL), Co-Chief Therapist at the ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships, and Medical Lead for the 2022 Canada Summer Games (Wrestling, Lacrosse, Volleyball). These experiences allowed her to build valuable connections and gain practical insights before applying for a position with Rowing Canada. Dr. Szabo was on her way to the Olympics!
By the time the 2024 Paris Games arrived, Dr. Szabo was well prepared having gained her Sport Specialist designation as a RCCSS(C) Fellow, with 9 years of experience working in sport, and the unwavering support of her family and friends. Their encouragement played a crucial role in allowing her to pursue her lifelong goal to work on the world stage with elite athletes.
At the Olympics, she joined Rowing Canada’s Integrated Support Team (IST) with various practitioners including physiologists, registered dietitians, and a sport physician. “Effective communication within the IST was crucial,” Dr. Szabo explains. “We held nightly medical meetings to discuss any concerns, recovery strategies, and illness prevention.” This teamwork ensured that the athletes received the comprehensive care needed to excel on the water.
“Watching the race and celebrating with the team was a highlight,” she recalls. “It was amazing to see their hard work pay off.” Before the race, the team gathered for a shot of maple syrup—a quintessential Canadian good luck charm. As the women’s eight crew rowed into a second-place finish, Dr. Szabo and her IST colleagues erupted in celebration from the sidelines at the team’s silver medal win.
For those aspiring to work in sports chiropractic, Dr. Szabo offers practical advice: “Know why you want to work in sports. The path can be tough, but having a clear goal will help you through the challenges.” She also emphasizes the importance of self-care and maintaining a strong support system. “Consistency in taking care of yourself and staying connected with loved ones is crucial,” she adds.
